Crime and Justice

This is not an easy topic to discuss. It requires a very developed concept of who YOU are and what YOU believe in order to have a thoughtful perspective on this.

And this will change with time. You will change your opinions and positions.

It may seem very easy to want to punish a criminal. He/she stole something; he/she ought to be punished. He/she murdered someone, or many people; he/she should receive the death penalty.

But then you think about it, or read another idea. The killer comes from a poor background and little education; furthermore, his/her parents abused him/her.

Still, however, the killer knew that killing was wrong and that death could be the punishment. But still you think about it.

Does killing the killer solve the problem? No. Solving the problem means that it happens less in the future. So that means ensuring that all young people receive proper education and that children are protected from violence.

Executing the murderer may seem like an appropriate response, but it is avoiding the problem.

Poverty and a lack of education are two key factors in crime. Shouldn't society try to reduce those two problems?

Making a difference

In this video, Adam Foss, a prosecutor, talks about how the justice system needs to focus on reducing crime, not punishing it.

Once a youth goes into the prison system, there is a high likelihood that they will re-offend. Listen to how Foss helped young people find the right path.

Warning: he speaks clearly, but very fast. Don't be shy to read along or use subtitles.
The Death Penalty

A comedic approach to thinking about capital punishment. Oliver discusses some of the major issues in capital punishment.

1. Research that shows people who are exonerated after being killed.
2. The high cost of executing people. It is actually quite expensive.
3. he poses the question as to what kind of society we want to be; do we want to be a society that allows murder out of revenge?
