A Brief Explanation
We are living in exciting times!
Space travel has been going on for years, but in the last decade, we've been talking about a lot more cool aspects of it.
1. Going to Mars: movies, books and even real NASA (USA) and Roscosmos (Russia) research and preparation for sending astronauts there.
2. Mining Asteroids: there are many useful resources that can be extracted from asteroids. If they can be used to build structures in space, it solves a lot of the problems of space travel (this problem is the high expense of getting ships off earth).

3. Studying gravity waves and black holes: Did you see the film 'Interstellar'? In the end of the film (spoiler alert), they point out that so much can be learned from studying black holes. We would learn so much about the history of the universe, and about physics itself, that we'd gain knowledge that could help us in ways we can't even imagine.
IELTS test question: Should we spend so much money travelling to space when there are so many problems on earth?
YES: the short answer.
We would learn a lot doing it. The science and research that would be required to develop longer space flights would help us. We are still today reaping the benefits of our limited space travel: satellites, computers, food preservation techniques, to name but a few. Beyond that, we could learn a lot about gravity and black holes. Scientists cannot even predict the ways in which we would benefit. Maybe clean energy production? Faster space travel? Faster computers?
And of course, aliens? Is there any intelligent life out there? I don't think you'll need to talk about this in your IELTS exam, but it's fun, so we'll talk about it at the end of this page.
